Education First is a fantastic place to work. We strive to create a workplace that is positive, inclusive and equitable, and is worth going to every day. Our vibrant culture is built on our genuine care for the students we serve, our clients and each other.
We are, and always have been, a virtual firm with team members across the country. There is no typical day. Some days you work from your home office and other days you set up in a coffee shop or prepare for a client meeting during a cross-country flight. In a single day, you might draft a client deliverable, workshop a different product in a project team meeting, present to a client or tackle an internal project. Team members structure their work days to deliver high-quality work and collaborate with their colleagues. As our core value Follow Through Together says: We do what we say we will, when we say we will, to support one another and help realize our intended impact.
We build deep relationships with clients and colleagues, coach and support our teammates, voice our ideas and share our authentic selves. We have virtual Culture Club activities, coffee chats, all-staff calls, professional learning and more. Ed Firsters get together in-person at our annual All-Staff Retreat to engage in multi-day connection and learning, engaging in culture-building activities and celebrating our impact. When team members return to the field, we celebrate them as Ed First Alumni who continue to make a difference to improve public education.
I view the culture at Ed First as a great combination of great work and having fun. I appreciate the lightheartedness of our staff, the freedom to express ourselves authentically in how we dress and the opportunities to build relationships while engaging in fun activities (e.g., karaoke night at retreat). Ed First has also provided me spaces for meaningful community-building, such as the Latinx ERG, LGBTQIA+ affinity group and a vegan affinity group.
Since I joined Ed First, I’ve been struck by how caring our community is. People here truly care about their colleagues as human beings and I’ve been truly impressed by how we continue to make concrete investments to improve the staff experience and promote a more inclusive and equitable culture.
Education First is an incredibly collaborative work environment. Even though I am working from home I spend more time connecting with colleagues than I ever did in an office and I love it because the people at Ed First are AMAZING! Ed First balances working hard on things I am passionate about with recognizing I am a person who has a life outside of work.
The core values are at the heart of the Ed First hiring process. We seek to design a multi-step experience that allows candidates to highlight their experiences in alignment with a particular role.
As a team member, you’ll experience professional development that maximizes your contributions to our firm and clients. We understand what excellence looks like in our roles and we own our own growth. Professional learning and reflection are a top priority. Through our coaching system, competency model and individual goals, each team member is put on a path of professional growth by engaging in internal and external learning activities, RIDE development, learning communities and more.
I joined Ed First in part because of the firm’s focus on professional growth. Years and several roles later, it’s also one of the reasons I stay. Thoughtful structures are in place at firm, department, role and individual levels to make professional development part of our regular practice. I also appreciate that I’m able to learn regularly from my incredibly talented colleagues — colleagues who care deeply about doing great work and supporting their teams.
Professional growth at Education First comes in three ways: learning, doing and watching. I’ve learned content and skills through annual retreats and firmwide learning sessions several times each month. I’ve done project work that helped me grow as a facilitator, thought partner and writer. And I’ve watched great Ed First colleagues in action as they present findings, help clients reach conclusions or sort through conflicting options. Professional growth at Ed First is everywhere.
At Education First, we value and prioritize our employees’ career growth and professional development. We provide a nurturing environment that includes mentorship, internal training programs and opportunities for continuous learning. My own journey at Ed First is a testament to this commitment — I began as an Executive Assistant and was promoted to roles such as Operations Specialist, Senior Manager of Operations and Benefits, and ultimately, Director of Human Resources. With Ed First’s unwavering support, I also earned my PHR® and SPHR® certifications, helping me achieve my professional goals.
