Three Vignettes that Showcase the Professional Learning that Teachers Need

In this brief we offer three examples of efforts to provide teachers with strong training and development around the Common Core. While these efforts aren’t flawless, we believe they showcase the sort of constant, intentional learning opportunities that educators need to implement the Common Core. The three examples we highlight are: 1) Expeditionary Learning and the New York State Education Department; 2) California Office to Reform Education and Sacramento City Unified School District; and 3) Nevada’s Washoe County School District. Each highlights a different approach to how states and districts can design and provide meaningful training for teachers.

We developed the brief with support from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation as part of a series focused on CCSS professional development titled Common Core State Standards & the Transformation of Professional Development. The series is comprised of an introduction and three briefs providing school and system leaders and professional development providers with models for providing high-quality learning experiences.
